Fear vs motivation…

There are only two way to make people run –Fear and motivation. We can induce same to get things done from any human being or team. Army mixes both well, person could die for the country, or the boss. Both ways (fear or motivation) have their good or bad impacts. All organization are like armies which are providing comfort zones and security of salary and wants people run to get it.

My learning with 100 Ted talks

We were small accounting group. Learning through corporate way was tedious. So, I decided to train  my subordinates by showing them TED talks every fortnightly. It was just 15 minutes journey with English subtitles (every week). We took breaks from regular work and sat in closed room to listen world’s best experts. Listening TED with group, it has huge impact on our life. We are more learned and awake.

Every employee is different. We have different needs. Normal shools have failed to fill that gap especially emotional needs.

#Metoo India – Change movement without direction..

#Metoo has arrived in India. It is heart-warming that girls are coming out. They are vomiting emotional secrets. It is not easy. It requires courage (lot of courage). Being vulnerable in front of one person is easy but in front of whole society needs big hearts. Salute to the girls who are coming out boldly.

Laws vs Morality

Current period of Supreme court’ aggression in India is interesting. Liberals are celebrating it – 377 gone, 497 gone. Some think that state is out of our bedroom. One Judge also stated – that adultery is morally wrong but not a crime. We want freedom. It is human nature celebrate each falling law.

Laws are there to control society. Companies are also small section of society with additional laws made by HR/owner. It is a control mechanism. Laws may be written or unwritten, they exit in even developed societies.  

Learning from World cup

FIFA world cup is a celebration of team work. Teams work hard for a single goal. They celebrate together and then look for another goal. Goals are many, but purpose is same - being excellent team. Whole arena has rewards and has punishment. And in end it is celebration of human spirit.

They rub each other, they get yellow card, red cards, injury, and still we run. Team has collection of stories and skills. Someone is striker and someone is defender. No-one’s role is small or big. Just it is important. If I have to summarise lessons in FIFA world cup..

EGO Branding

In Turkey, wearing veil was a culture. A reformer came and gave dictate that it is mandatory for prostitute to wear veil. This small step changed the whole country. Other women left wearing it. By linking a religious ego satisfying product to a lower standard, he killed a habit.

Building Trust

I came across an interesting TED video on building trust by the Harvard business school professor Frances Frei. It gives new prospective in eroding value of society “Trust”.  Trust has three pillars and if anyone gets shaky, we lose trust.

Three pillars are empathy, logic, and authenticity. Let’s discuss one by one.

Technology and work

Most of us don’t like to work. Most of us are working in wrong fields. It is difficult to force fit self when you don’t like the work. In transactions, life is more miserable. Routine jobs slowly kills our creativity. They are necessary evils. We can’t ignore transaction from strategy.

Though companies are trying hard to soften the burden by trying employee friendly policies. We have come long way from hard working , ruthless worker culture to today’s somewhat employee friendly office culture. Machines have played an important role.
