Multitasking and productivity

Multitasking works, but only in few scenario. Multitasking is biggest culprit in delay in projects. Managers love to work on multiple projects. They complete very few in end. Multitasking gives feeling of productivity. But in end, we keep jumping from one task to another.

Multi-tasking is the act of stopping a task before it is completed and shifting to something else. Each time a person has to re-start a task, time is required to become re-familiarized with the work and get re-set in where he was in the process.

Load balancing

Organizations miss this opportunity. Ideal load balancing is not possible. However, we must put efforts to judge loads on our key people. No one is superhuman here. HIPO should get consistently challenging assignments. This is one area where HR, quality and operation should work together. Larger organization may have pockets of low productivity and high productivity based on business scenario. It is unfair to load single asset, HIPO or person on high expectations. He will collapse. In diversified arena, business has to evaluate its need, efficiency and flexibility.

IT failure = quality initiative failure

Many quality initiatives hit wall of IT support. Process changes need system support to get it flow smoothly.  And change agents like us can’t do much at IT related issues. Changing few fields in ERP in any organization needs many layers of authorizations. Discussing some key IT issues here.

Digitization and Challenges

Automation is a big dream especially in service industry. All of us want smooth flow of data. Whole cycle should be paper free. Data from customers , vendors, employee should flow automatically. Despite having so many computers, tons of paper being created for accounting purpose, processing purpose , or legal purpose. There are many challenges in digitization. System does not flow as we wish. Lets discuss 3 major hurdle ..

Discipline Vs Innovation

Both are opposite. Both are needed. Consistent discipline is about process improvement through six sigma, quality circle etc. Six Sigma loves business rules and follows them for sustainable results.

Innovation on other hand is free flow of ideas. It does not understand rule or hierarchy. It requires consistent flow of ideas and executions.

Both are opposite in some sense. One requires structure, other requires free flow. Let’s analysis them in 2*2 matrix in terms of S curve of organization

Why ideal KPI model remains illusion?

Many companies start implementation of process KPIs (Key performance Indicator)/ dashboards. However, very few get their destiny. Dream is to capture KPI drill down upto last mile and extract real time information from it. It is not easy. It is rough road. Many companies keep searching root cause for all issues in perceptions. Data hardly supports. I am trying to write some key points of my views on this issue.
