FIFA world cup is a celebration of team work. Teams work hard for a single goal. They celebrate together and then look for another goal. Goals are many, but purpose is same - being excellent team. Whole arena has rewards and has punishment. And in end it is celebration of human spirit.
They rub each other, they get yellow card, red cards, injury, and still we run. Team has collection of stories and skills. Someone is striker and someone is defender. No-one’s role is small or big. Just it is important. If I have to summarise lessons in FIFA world cup..
- Leadership is oversold idea: Messi, Ronaldo, Or Neymar. They are leader in this field. But in reality, team wins. No single man can make you win. We need efforts and dedication from each unit/person of the team. As someone said “ team is as strong – as its weakest link”. In good weather, leadership can be inspirational. But in bad weather where each unit is being tested, we need each one to be a leader. Problem with leaders is they can be curtailed in war.
- Teams need purpose: Purpose to win or celebrate. Purpose to achieve something unique. Purpose to take humanity one step ahead. In world full of crime, depression and disease, we need pockets of such teams with positive and inspiring purpose. World is full of teams but most of them are purposeless. They have skill but no direction. Teams with direction and purpose get its madness. Meantime, we saw prayers for Thai boys. Whole world was working for purpose of humanity – To save boys. We need teams with bigger purposes with sense of urgency and commitment.
- History counts for nothing: Don’t get scared with marketing brands and big names. World’s best can be vulnerable under pressure. Brazil, Argentina, or Germany are few examples. Passion, tactical benefit and self-belief can create setback any day.
- Foreign Coach can help: Mostly team tries their own way. Russia and Belgium had hired foreign coaches. They helped to unlock team potential. To reach at next level, we need outsiders to tell what is seriously wrong. Team after some time becomes self-addictive. They can’t see their faults. We need auditors and coaches who can critically examine the team and give rectification.
- Know your strength: Asian teams are no-where. This is not their worldcup. Physical strength of European or south American can easily outsmart them. So they should focus on their own strength like science , social efforts, or yoga. We can’t get excellence in field where we have strategic dis- advantage.
